Can your generators be operated in the rain or snow?Updated a month ago

Can I Operate My Generator in Rain or Snow?

Generators should not be operated in direct rain or heavy snowfall without protection. Exposure to moisture can damage electrical components and create potential safety hazards.

If you need to operate the generator during bad weather, we recommend using overhead protection to help keep the generator dry while still allowing proper ventilation.

Recommended Protection

A common solution is using a generator running cover or tent, such as a GenTent®, which is designed to protect the generator from rain or snow while it is operating.

These covers help:

  • Protect the generator from moisture

  • Allow proper airflow for safe operation

  • Keep electrical outlets and control panels dry

Important Safety Notes

⚠ Always ensure the generator is:

  • Operated outdoors only

  • Positioned in a well-ventilated area

  • Not enclosed or restricted by the cover

Generator covers should never block ventilation openings or exhaust flow.

Common Questions

Can I run my generator uncovered in the rain?

No. Running a generator in direct rain without protection can allow water to enter electrical components and cause damage or electrical hazards.

Can I put a tarp over my generator while it is running?

A tarp may trap heat or restrict airflow. It is safer to use a generator cover specifically designed for operation, such as a GenTent.
