Central AC -Portable Generator CompatibilityUpdated a month ago

Can a Portable Generator Run a Central Air Conditioner?

Running a central air conditioning system (Central AC) with a portable generator depends primarily on the size and electrical requirements of the AC unit.

Because AC systems vary by manufacturer and model, it is difficult to provide a definitive compatibility answer without reviewing the full specifications of the AC unit.

Typical Generator Size Recommendations

Based on feedback from customers who have successfully powered their central AC systems, the following general guidelines may apply:

AC Unit SizeRecommended Generator Series
3 Ton – 4 Ton Central ACXP13000 Series
5 Ton Central ACXP15000 Series

These are general estimates, and actual requirements may vary depending on the starting surge and running wattage of the AC system.

Why Central AC Units Are Difficult to Start

Central air conditioners require a large surge of power during startup, known as starting or locked rotor amperage (LRA).

This initial surge can be significantly higher than the unit’s normal running power requirements.

Soft Start Recommendation

To help reduce the startup surge, we strongly recommend installing a Soft Start device on the AC unit.

A soft start device helps by:

  • Reducing the initial power surge

  • Allowing the generator to handle the startup load more easily

  • Improving generator compatibility with large appliances like central AC systems

Professional Installation Recommended

⚠ We recommend consulting a licensed electrician or HVAC technician to evaluate your AC system and generator compatibility.

A professional can:

  • Verify the AC unit’s starting and running wattage

  • Recommend the appropriate generator size

  • Install a soft start system if needed

Important Note

Because every AC system is different, the final determination of generator compatibility should always be based on the AC unit’s electrical specifications, including:

  • Starting amperage (LRA)

  • Running amperage (RLA)

  • Voltage requirements
