Generator Electrical Output Troubleshooting Guide

If your generator is running but experiencing electrical issues, use the guide below to identify the problem and possible solution.

This article covers the most common electrical issues:

  • Generator running but no power output

  • Generator producing low voltage

  • Breaker keeps tripping

  • One outlet not working

Issue 1: Generator Running but No Power Output

Step 1: Check the Multimeter Display

Locate the multimeter on the control panel and press the MODE button until voltage appears.

Expected readings:

  • 120V for 120V outlets

  • 120V / 240V for dual-voltage outlets

If the display shows no voltage, continue to Step 2.

Step 2: Inspect Generator Electrical Components

Remove the two screws from the generator end cap to inspect internal components.

This will expose:

  • AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator)

  • Brushes

  • Stator windings

  • Rotor

Inspect for:

  • Burnt wiring

  • Melted insulation

  • Loose connections

  • Physical damage

Damaged components may require replacement.

Issue 2: Generator Producing Low Voltage

If the generator is producing power but voltage is lower than expected, check the following:

Possible Causes

  • Faulty Voltage Regulator (AVR)

  • Worn brushes

  • Damaged stator windings

  • Loose electrical connections

If the stator and rotor appear undamaged, the AVR or brushes may require replacement.

Issue 3: Breaker Keeps Tripping

If the generator breaker repeatedly trips:

Check for Overload

The generator may be powering too many devices at once.

Disconnect devices and restart the generator.

Reconnect loads one device at a time.

Inspect Power Cords

Check generator cords and extension cables for:

  • Damaged insulation

  • Bent connectors

  • Loose wiring

Faulty cables can cause breaker trips.

Issue 4: One Outlet Not Working

If one outlet is not working but others are functioning normally:

Test Multiple Outlets

Plug a device into another outlet on the generator panel.

This will determine if the issue is limited to one outlet.

Check GFCI Outlets

Some models include GFCI outlets.

Press the RESET button on the outlet to restore power.

Parts That May Require Replacement

Based on the issue observed, the following components may require replacement.

Voltage Regulator (AVR) & Brushes

May require replacement if:

  • Generator shows no voltage output

  • Stator and rotor appear undamaged

  • Breakers are functioning normally

Stator and Rotor

Replace if you observe:

  • Burnt windings

  • Melted insulation

  • Severe physical damage

These components generate electricity within the generator.

Control Panel Assembly

If the entire panel is not receiving power, or appears damaged, the complete control panel may need replacement.

Breakers or Receptacles

If voltage is present but outlets are not working, the issue may be with:

  • Circuit breakers

  • Receptacles

  • Internal panel wiring

When to Contact Support

If the generator is still not producing electricity after completing these checks, please provide the following information when contacting support:

  • Generator model number

  • Hours of operation

  • Voltage reading on the panel meter

  • Description of the issue
