Generator Winter Storage InstructionsUpdated a month ago

How Should I Store My Generator for the Winter?

If you plan to store your generator during the winter months or for an extended period of time, proper preparation is important to prevent fuel system problems, battery damage, and corrosion.

Follow the steps below to properly prepare your generator for winter storage.

Step 1: Turn the Generator Breaker OFF

Move the main breaker on the generator control panel to the OFF position to remove any electrical load before shutting down the unit.

Step 2: Allow the Generator to Cool Down

Allow the generator to run for 3–5 minutes with no load before shutting it down.

This allows the engine to cool gradually and stabilize internal temperatures.

Step 3: Shut Off the Fuel Supply

If Running on Propane or Natural Gas

Turn OFF the fuel supply valve at the tank or gas connection.

If Running on Gasoline

Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position and allow the generator to continue running until it stalls.

This clears gasoline from the carburetor system.

Step 4: Drain or Stabilize the Fuel

For winter storage, it is recommended to either:

  • Fully drain the fuel tank, or

  • Add a fuel stabilizer to the gasoline to prevent fuel degradation.

Gasoline left untreated during long storage periods can form deposits that clog the carburetor.

Step 5: Drain the Carburetor Bowl

Drain the carburetor float bowl to remove any remaining fuel inside the carburetor.

This helps prevent fuel varnish buildup during long-term storage.

Step 6: Lubricate the Engine Cylinder

  1. Remove the spark plug.

  2. Pour approximately 2 tablespoons of engine oil into the spark plug hole.

  3. Slowly pull the recoil starter or briefly press the electric start button (the generator will not start).

This distributes oil inside the cylinder to prevent rust and corrosion.

Step 7: Remove and Maintain the Battery

Remove the generator battery and store it indoors in a dry location.

Place the battery on a trickle charger or battery maintainer to keep it properly charged during storage.

Step 8: Store the Generator Properly

Store the generator in a cool, dry location, protected from moisture and freezing conditions.

Important storage guidelines:

  • Do not block ventilation openings

  • Keep the generator away from snow, moisture, or standing water

  • Store the unit where it is protected from extreme temperature changes

Preparing the Generator for Use After Winter Storage

Before starting the generator after winter storage:

  • Reinstall the battery

  • Install the spark plug

  • Add fresh fuel

  • Check the engine oil level

  • Inspect the air filter

Common Questions

Why is winter storage preparation important?

Cold weather and long storage periods can cause fuel degradation, battery discharge, and internal engine corrosion if the generator is not properly prepared.

Should I start my generator periodically during winter storage?

Starting the generator occasionally can help circulate oil and keep internal components lubricated, but it is not required if the generator was properly prepared for storage.
