How should I store my generator if I'm planning on storing my generator for over 30 days?Updated a month ago

How Should I Store My Generator for More Than 30 Days?

If you plan to store your generator for 30 days or longer, proper preparation is important to prevent fuel system issues and ensure the generator starts easily when needed again.

Follow the steps below for long-term generator storage.

Step 1: Turn the Generator Breaker OFF

Move the main breaker on the generator control panel to the OFF position.

This removes the electrical load before shutting the generator down.

Step 2: Allow the Generator to Run Without Load

Allow the generator to run for 3–5 minutes with no load.

This helps stabilize the engine temperature and prepares the unit for shutdown.

Step 3: Shut Off the Fuel Supply

Shutdown procedure depends on the fuel type being used.

If Running on Propane or Natural Gas

Turn OFF the fuel supply valve at the tank or gas connection.

If Running on Gasoline

Move the fuel valve to the OFF position and allow the generator to continue running until it stalls from lack of fuel.

This helps clear gasoline from the carburetor system.

Step 4: Turn Off the Generator

Once the engine stops running:

  • Turn the key switch or rocker switch to the OFF position, or

  • If your generator has push-button start, turn the battery switch to the OFF position.

Step 5: Remove or Stabilize the Fuel

For long-term storage, you should either:

  • Fully drain the fuel tank, or

  • Add a fuel stabilizer to the gasoline to prevent fuel degradation.

Step 6: Drain the Carburetor Bowl

Drain the carburetor float bowl to remove any remaining fuel inside the carburetor.

This helps prevent fuel varnish and carburetor clogging during storage.

Step 7: Remove the Spark Plug

Remove the spark plug from the engine.

Step 8: Lubricate the Cylinder

Add 2 tablespoons of engine oil into the spark plug hole.

Then:

  • Slowly pull the recoil starter, or

  • Briefly press the electric start button (the engine will not start)

This distributes oil inside the cylinder to prevent corrosion during storage.

Step 9: Remove the Battery

Remove the generator battery and place it on a battery maintainer or trickle charger to keep the battery properly charged during storage.

Step 10: Store the Generator Properly

Store the generator in a cool, dry location.

Important storage guidelines:

  • Do not block ventilation openings

  • Keep the generator away from moisture and extreme temperatures

  • Store it in a clean, dry environment

Common Questions

Why should the carburetor be drained before storage?

Gasoline can degrade over time and form deposits, which may clog the carburetor and cause starting issues.

Do I need to remove the battery during long storage?

Yes. Removing the battery and placing it on a trickle charger helps maintain battery life.

Can I leave gasoline in the tank for long storage?

It is recommended to drain the fuel or use a fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel deterioration.
