What are the Natural Gas Fuel Pressure and BTU Requirements for Tri-Fuel Generators?Updated a month ago

Natural Gas Requirements for DuroMax Tri-Fuel Generators

DuroMax Tri-Fuel generators can operate on Natural Gas, Propane, or Gasoline. When using Natural Gas, it is important that the gas supply meets the proper pressure and BTU requirements for the generator to operate correctly.

Required Natural Gas Pressure

All DuroMax Tri-Fuel generators require natural gas inlet pressure between:

6.0 – 9.0 inches of water column (WC)

This pressure range must be maintained across all load levels for the generator to start and run properly.

If the pressure falls below this range, the generator may:

  • Fail to start

  • Run roughly

  • Stall under load

  • Produce reduced power output

Natural Gas BTU Requirements by Generator Model

Your natural gas supply must be able to deliver sufficient BTU capacity to operate the generator at full load.

Generator ModelRequired BTU (Full Load)
XP7000IHT121,000 BTU
XP9500IHT176,000 BTU
XP11000IHT204,000 BTU
XP13000HXT225,000 BTU
XP15000HXT / XP15000HXT+278,000 BTU
XP16000iHT295,000 BTU
XP28000iHT327,000 BTU

If the gas supply cannot provide the required BTU capacity, the generator may not operate properly or may shut down under heavy loads.

Professional Installation Recommendation

We strongly recommend that a certified natural gas plumber perform the installation when connecting a Tri-Fuel generator to a natural gas supply.

A licensed professional can ensure:

  • Proper gas pressure

  • Correct pipe sizing

  • Safe installation

  • Compliance with local codes

Common Questions

Why won’t my generator start on natural gas?

The most common causes are:

  • Insufficient gas pressure

  • Inadequate BTU supply

  • Incorrect gas line sizing

Can I connect my generator directly to my home’s natural gas line?

Yes, but the gas supply must meet the required pressure and BTU specifications listed above.

What happens if my gas supply cannot provide enough BTUs?

The generator may:

  • Run poorly

  • Shut down under load

  • Produce reduced power output
