Generator Starts, but will not stay runningUpdated a month ago

If you happen to be having issues with your generator starting but only staying on temporarily and then shutting down, please follow the suggested tips down below.

  1. Make sure the unit has proper oil levels.
  2. Ensure that the Idle Control is in the off position (If generator has this feature)
  3. Verify fuel quality (Not Old/Dirty)
  4. Inspect /change out spark plug & Air filter
  5. Check for Choke Position and Operation (Please note EH will have a manual choke)
  6. Inspect the Air Filter Assembly box to make sure it is sealed properly
  7. Inspect Fuel lines for any leaks in the system
  8. Test Generator out on other fuel Sources: If you notice other fuel sources having the same issue, we would recommend to try the Selector Bypass Procedure (CLICK HERE) How to bypass Fuel Selector Switch Test
  9. Review Control panel for any sensor lights being triggered (Carbon Monoxide / Low Oil Sensor)
  10. If low oil sensor light is on but you have confirmed that there is the correct amount of oil in the unit. We would suggest on testing the unit with the low oil sensor disconnected. (Link to Low Oil Sensor Bypass)
  11. Lastly, we would recommend to adjust the valves (Valve Lash).  (CLICK HERE) On instructions how to adjust valves

Potential Part Replacements Based off Symptoms:

CO Sensor: Solid yellow light comes on, would indicate a potential bad CO sensor and may require for this part to be replaced. (Please note: Flashing = testing / RED = unsafe emissions SENSOR IS WORKING)

 Low Oil Sensor & Amplifier:
If Low Oil sensor disconnect test works, this part may need to be replaced. (Please note, we would recommend on having a shop do this type of replacement job)

Air Filter/Assembly Box: If air filter is dirty or assembly box is  damaged, these part(s) may need to be replaced.

Fuel Selector/ Micro Switches: After testing the bypass of the fuel selector switch or recalibrate the micro switch before considering replacing the either of these parts

Ignition Coil: If spark seems to be the issue and wire disconnect and plugs do NOT work, may require for this part to be replaced.

Linkage Components (Springs & Brackets) : Physical damage, stretched, broken may require for these parts to be replaced.

Spark Plug: Replace if needed
